With steam traction having been eliminated from the area in the mid-1970s, who would have thought that it would have been possible for a revival of steam to take place, between 2001 and 2007, this being in the form of specialised photographic charter operations, including freight, mixed and passenger trains. These utilised authentic motive power for the lines portrayed. Thus, fittingly, the GF and GMA/M Garratts dominate the coverage, just as they dominated the last years of real steam operation in the area, although ‘straight’ locomotives are also included. The coverage is comprehensive, ranging from Deepdale to Donnybrook, Donnybrook to Creighton, and from Creighton onwards through stunning scenery to Riversdale. Brief coverage is also given to the Underburg, Kokstad and Matatiele branch lines.
