I visit places like the Powerhouse and I can't help but imagine what a "normal" day as an operating engineer was like. Hot, noisy with the smell of oil, diesel, solvents and grease, this was truly an industrial environment, a "man's environment" to boot.
Dangerous is a good way to describe places like this, there isn’t a piece of this machinery or a catwalk in this building that wouldn't like to kill you, given the opportunity.
When this facility was serving it's institution, from the late 1930's up until the 1990's, it was busy, well maintained, lovingly cared for, painted regularly, carefully, even after years of dereliction and neglect and vandalism, the pride with which this facility was constructed, organized and maintained ring clear.
As with all of the images in the Abandoned America series, none have been retouched, enhanced, tweaked diddled or noodled. I do all of my work in camera - for better, sometimes for worse, but what you are seeing is the truth.
