During the heyday of the transatlantic liner, the SS United States was arguably the belle of the ball. Using state of the art technology, she was built for safety, speed, and style. Her mid-century modern interiors, designed by Dorothy Marckwald of Smyth, Urquhart & Marckwald, eschewed the seagoing traditions of the French, English, German and Italian vessels in favor of brightly colored and streamlined contemporary furnishings -- without a scrap of wood paneling in sight. Aboard the United States, form didn't just follow function, but flattered it as well.
