Today, post-incarcerated individuals comprise 7% of the US population. Most have limited freedoms and many are on probationary release, requiring them to exist outside of prison in a limited capacity. Such an individual is reliant on a network of resources and people including, but not limited to family, case workers, parole officers, counselors, employers, drivers, and landlords. With an estimated 700,000 inmates released each year, these returning individuals present a unique challenge to society. Some will transition back to their homes and others will not. Within three years, 63% of post-incarcerated individuals will find themselves back in the prisons they once occupied. The goal of this project is to utilize architecture to facilitate reintegration and ultimately reduce recidivism rates. I approach the problem of reintegration by utilizing an approach of radical hospitality by providing a living community with easy access to housing and counseling. This approach encourages the healthy expression of personal agency in those who have had it stripped away. The project aims to reduce recidivism in three ways: by providing a modular home able to be moved from the site, a positive community focused on collaboration, and a place of healing tailored to provide agency. By providing a free home the thesis eradicates homeless post-incarceration. By providing a community that decides where and how to place modular program elements the thesis promotes agency. And, by introducing new programmatic elements such as counsel and group counsel units, the thesis is able to begin to change the existing negative narrative surrounding post-incarcerated individuals. To drastically reduce the number of people in prison and committing desperate crime, this thesis expands upon an existing urban Grand Rapids re-entry framework in order to achieve a net social good.
