À propos du livre
HER KIND develops a critique of female stereotypes in Western culture, consisting of three movements with each following a particular stereotype, both antiquated ideas and those that remain pervasive to this day. The movements are as follows: Capital, focusing on the Victorian principle of marriage for the sake of dowries, land investments, or arrangements between males in power; Object, focusing on the sexual objectification of women’s bodies, which has been a long-standing trope but became especially widespread with the rise of advertising in the first half of the 20th century; and Womb, focusing on viewing women as solely reproductive hosts rather than complex individuals. These movements include photography and an associated short story. A process of transformation and destruction occurs in the images over the course of the movements, beginning with Movement II’s double exposures created by stacking negatives in an enlarger that warps the original image, and concluding with physically burning the photographs of Movement III.
