Step back in time in these pages to visit a village that rests peacefully in the Piedmont of Virginia, just 42 miles outside Washington, D.C., lovingly protected by those who live here and those who appreciate that well into the 20th century most Americans lived and worked on farms or in small towns much like Waterford, Virginia.



In 1970 through the efforts of the Waterford Foundation and its members, the village and its surrounding open space were designated a National Historic Landmark District, the highest designation of historic significance possible in the U.S., and places it on par with Mt. Vernon and Monticello—a rare honor.



These photographs were taken during one beautiful week in May 2009 by talented local photographer Jim Hanna

Founded in 1943, the Waterford Foundation, Inc. is one of America’s first community-based historic preservation organizations with the mission to preserve the historic buildings and open spaces of the National Historic Landmark District of Waterford, Virginia; and through education, to increase the public’s knowledge of life and work in an early American rural community. Jim Hanna has enjoyed photography since he was a kid. Over the years, through study and experience, the medium has become a means to adventure and insight through landscapes, environmental portraits, aerials and panoramas in the U. S. and overseas. Currently, his work focuses primarily on an appreciation of the ecology, heritage and sustainable development in and around Loudoun County, Virginia.
