À propos du livre
I have seen unrestricted, obstacle-free horizons, clear, limitless, bright horizons, blinding my eyes with a new, different kind of light. Deep and rarefied skies. The desert, the real one, made of bushes and snakes, where humans zoom around in search of the nearest city. But also the desert of the city itself, created by man, where the sand has become concrete, the desert anyone would like to pass through rapidly but which engulfs people into traffic, into asphalt, into the infinite serpent of steel horses.
It is precisely in this California that I have looked for landscapes different from the ones I had encountered before, different because distant yet not unexpected but rather sought for, evoked, real, at last. Landscapes bearing traces of man’s touch even when they are distant from any megalopolis because mankind has spread everywhere. Landscapes and inhabited places away from the thousands of lights, close to those limitless horizons where one can still savour the taste of the frontier, of freedom, still feel the fascination of discoloured celluloid.
These places tell us about times which are not so distant from us but are nevertheless already buried in the dust, damaged by the Sun, where human objects are silent yet proud witnesses of colonisation. Objects telling us about the present day, objects retaining some Beauty even when derelict, lonesome or simple and ordinary. Common and still extraordinary.
