The image of Suburbia, a place continuously depicted as an environment of isolation, mass production, homogeneity, materialism, family dysfunction, voyeurism, and artificiality, has been frequently portrayed in popular culture from the 1950s and onwards as a place that was overly idealized and controlled by similar housing structures, household products, and social groups. This portrayal has influenced the overindulgence of consumer products such as radios, clocks, power tools, televisions, home decorations and unnecessary additions (such as the porch enclosure) that all consumers are tempted to be in possession of. Unlike other
excessively used products and equipment, the porch enclosure acts a threshold for individuals to walk through experiencing [the sounds of] the overindulgence of one’s own consumerism and of those around them.
