See Tanzania through the sketches and paintings of an artist inspired by Africa. Alison Nicholls stayed with the African People & Wildlife Fund (APW) on the Maasai Steppe, using her vibrant watercolors to depict daily life in a rural community, and highlight APW’s conservation initiatives. Full-page sketches of colorful Maasai celebrations; dusty cattle herds leaving the boma; women collecting water at the village stream; wet and dry season landscapes; and children at APW’s Environmental Summer Camp, are combined with insightful comments and excerpts from Alison’s field journals. A foreword by Laly Lichtenfeld PhD, APW Executive Director; and contributions by APW staff, explain the powerful effect of Alison’s drawing classes & village exhibition, and how these have exposed Tanzanian schoolchildren to the beauty of their communities and the rewards of sharing land amicably with wildlife. Using photographs of her painting process and finished acrylics, Alison also explains how she turns a complex conservation issue into a successful studio painting - using APW’s Living Walls; issues facing pastoralists; and human-elephant conflict as examples.
