À propos du livre
Society In Decline
Vintage, local, handmade advertising.
Rapidly disappearing from the common commercial landscape, what few old signs remain seem to jump off the sterile and homogeneous canvas that now lines our roadways.
These signs are unappreciated or scorned by many and are increasingly subjected to mandated destruction by some city ordinances. I submit that these works of commercial art instead ought to be cherished and preserved.
These are markers to a shared and local history. Even more, they link us to another mental state in which Quality is actual, not merely a cynical illusion packaged for mass consumption in a disconnected and declining society.
With this work I have vainly endeavored to catalog a few of the best examples encountered while traveling the country's desolated downtowns and bypassed 2-lane highways. Many of the works shown in the following pages have already been destroyed.
