There's a Place for Us, tells the story of the making of CORE Theatrics' 2012 production of West Side Story. While a performance tells one story, the rehearsal process of a play tells another story entirely, one of personal growth and transformation for all involved. You will see individuals forged into a company of caring, committed young adults. Captured here are these intimate moments of process, as well as the impact on the actors of the ancient story of what happens when people choose to love, rather than follow their culture's tradition of hate and fear. Actors 14-22 years old, are seen from audition callbacks to dress rehearsal. None of these images was posed. Enjoy a front row seat to the private processes that go into the making of a memorable play: each participant giving their all, thereby discovering their own humanity and thus revealing the beauty of their own soul. I was gifted with a "Brownie" camera on my 10th birthday. I’ve been capturing life as I've lived it ever since. As an art history/photography student in the 60's, I began to record the cultural shift swirling around me in CA which created a desire to live life from the inside out. I began to search for a direct experience with the power of God/Creator/Source without any intermediary, and found Subud. After a year of doing the spiritual exercise I accepted an invitation to be the cook for a fledgling Subud intentional community on the banks of the Shenandoah River in Virginia. I arrived with The Joy of Cooking and an army cookbook, naïve, willing to work/play hard, hoping to find my husband and live each day as an act of worship. What I gained was beyond my imagining as I stepped off the train and headed into an experience of community, fueled by a devotion to surrender to God, honoring all religious paths, participating in births and deaths and adjusting to real seasons, without boots!
