Chris Tang’s series ‘Surface’ looks at quandaries connected with identity and self- awareness in his own demographic. Investigating two specific ideas: representation & re-presentation, Tang captures individuals participating in ordinary and sometimes-banal daily scenarios. Perception becomes elusive; unsure of which element to comprehend. The disarranging aesthetic between documentary photography and the idea of a built reality, reflects on how Tang feels society sees young people today. Employing conspicuous lighting techniques and traditional film technology Tang suggests a cinematic aura to his aesthetic. Muted expressions reveal little of the character and trauma of Tang’s subjects; their identities seem either in transition or polysemic and open to interpretation. Tang’s portraits bind his subjects together as a generation in transition with the prospect of a circumspect future.
