A 24-hour Novella.

This story was entirely written, by hand with pen on paper, on the eighth of July, 2009, between the hours of 12:51 am and 11:55 pm.



One night, he gets in his car and heads north on the highway, looking for something to do with his life. Stopping at a roadside diner, he finds a place that seriously needs help. It’s a job nobody wants to do, and it’s not his job to do it…or maybe it is. “Freedom from self-pity; Freedom from fear of possibly doing something that would help someone else more than it would me...”



The guy just had this vision of leaving behind a shiny white porcelain bowl with clear water that flushes well. He was just somehow going to do it. The spirit was in him to be cheerful and thorough, and he seemed okay with that. It was seven straight up by his watch when he stepped into the men’s room, locked the door behind him, regarded the task ahead and declared, “This sh--’s got to go.”
