From 1976-1978 while working in Iran for the United Nations Handicraft Development Program, created to archive woven hand loom patterns in Kurdistan, I had the opportunity of spending months on the road researching textiles. I visiting small villages, interviewed people and was able to join the Kurdish spring migration to better understand how a nomadic culture lived with and used textiles. During the middle of my two-year tenure in July of 1977, I traveled over land from Kermanshah, in Kurdistan, Iran through Afghanistan to Ladakh, India, and back again. The year marked the last year of peace in Afghanistan.
