A study of growing up.
I have been photographing my son, Dexter, and his close friends in Dalston in the East End of London for over ten years.
I have continued to photograph many of the families, and have made portraits of the children as they grow up. Watching them prepare for the big wide world of secondary school is fascinating: bragging, imagining, swapping stories with each other… They are about to leave the innocent, secret world of early childhood for something altogether tougher and more challenging. Through the summer I made portraits of over thirty children as they made the move away from primary school. Their faces are just beginning to lengthen. This series records children on the threshold of a revelation, and the photograph acts as a prediction.
