...and the Author



Growing up in London’s swinging 60’s, the news was regularly filled with striking figures and fashion icons such as Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy. Into this mixture were heady political events like the scandal of the reputed mistress and party girl, Christine Keeler, to an alleged Russian spy linked to the government Minister of War, John Profumo. This threw the country - fascinated by ‘high heels in high places’ - into frenzy.



Capturing those larger than life characters were photographers such as David Bailey and Lord Snowdon and, on the minds of any would be youngster like me at the time was one thing, “I want this job!”



Even Kodak made things sound straightforward when it said, ‘You press the button, we do the rest’. It was never that simple of course and perhaps in reality the hard work of great landscape artists and technical perfectionists such as Ansell Adams were closer to the truth. This is one of his memorable quotes:



'Our lives at times seem a study in contrast... love & hate, birth & death, right & wrong... everything seen in absolutes of black & white. Too often we are not aware that it is the shades of grey that add depth & meaning to the starkness of those extremes'.



And here's one from David Bailey:



'I never cared for fashion much, amusing little seams and witty little pleats: it was the girls I liked.'



So here, in a 1000 days without a 'normal' day job, is my photographic interpretation - part glamour, part street - of wildly different but beautiful people. I hope it captures an evocative and intimate moment.
