This book features the paintings of artist Beth Shadur, from her "away with the faeries" series, begun while she was an artist in residence in Ireland. The works look at the ancient symbol of the spiral as seen not only in Celtic culture, but as found in world cultures. The book explores how the spiral is seen as a sacred entity, found in both nature and in man-made creations. Shadur blends her symbols, English and Gaelic text with images of the Irish sacred landscape of the Burren, which features remains of the creations of the ancient Celtic culture combined with a unique ecology of wildflowers, mountains, and limestone rock. Shadur paints the sacred mountain An Mullach Mor as an iconic image on which to combine her rich imagery of symbol, text and observed nature.

Beth Shadur is an artist who has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions throughout the world, and has curated numerous exhibitions, including several for The Poetic Dialogue Project, pairing visual artists with poets. Her work appears in numerous publications, including Twentieth Century Watercolors, and The Special Unit, Its Evolution Through Art. Shadur is a Ragdale Fellow, and was awarded the Thomas Watson Fellowship from Brown University. She has created over 125 murals throughout the United States and Great Britain, and her work is owned in many public and private collections. Her work has appeared at museums and galleries, including the Art Institute of Chicago and atThe Drawing Center in New York. She has served as a visiting artist at many universities, and is an Artist In Education for the Illinois Arts Council.
