This collection of paintings and poems by David Giles provides a vision of a deeper mystical reality beneath the everyday appearance of things. An award winning artist of sixteen years standing, Giles paints and writes poetry because he is driven to uncover a mystical narrative that is both his own and universal. Giles looks at his paintings and his writings like he remembers his dreams. They are his paintings and his writings but they are unconscious. They are not consciously controlled. As a process for unconscious expression Giles’ paintings and poems provide potent guidance and insight for the artist. But the depths to which the artist trawls provides also something universal, as though the artist has brought back to us images and meanings from the collective unconscious.



Giles’ invites us to peer through symbolic windows into a deeper reality, to dis-cover inner worlds. These inner worlds are the world of spirit. As well as being in the tradition of all kinds of artists in the modern age, this process also comes from and connects with, a more ancient source; when the artist was shaman and the artist’s role to journey down into the spirit world to find messages, symbols and meanings to bring back to the tribe.
