In May and June 2009, I volunteered for the Concordia Volunteer Abroad Program (CVAP) in Gulu, Uganda and participated in different health and hygiene related projects in an orphanage called St-Jude Children’s Home. I also took photographs for a pamphlet that the administration of the orphanage was putting together.



At St-Jude Children’s Home, I sometimes found myself using photography as a way to communicate, play and exchange with people rather than feeling like an observer. The digital camera permitted me to show the portraits immediately and accentuated the exchange. After returning from Uganda I made this photo book, Mak Cala, in which I compiled photographs of people at St-Jude Children’s Home who approached me and asked to be photographed. Each portrait or group of portraits has corresponding text that highlights the main activities on the day I took that photograph and what made the moment with the subject a special one. The text are in French (my mother tongue), English (the communication language between Canadians and Ugandans) and Luo ( The language spoken in Gulu region). A copy of the hand-made version was sent to St-Jude Children’s Home. Mak Cala means “ take my picture’’ in Luo.





All proceeds raised by the sale of Mak Cala will help finance CVAP’s and The Mercy Project’s sustainable community outreach projects in Gulu.

Durant les mois de mai et juin 2009, j’ai travaillé comme bénévole à Gulu dans le Nord de l’Ouganda dans le cadre d’un programme de coopération internationale, le Concordia Volunteer Abroad Program (CVAP). J’ai alors participé à des projets de santé et sanitation au St-Jude Children’s Home, un orphelinat où logent environ 150 enfants. J’ai aussi pris des photos pour un dépliant que l’administration de l’orphelinat était en train de concevoir.



À St-Jude Children’s Home, je me suis parfois trouvée à utiliser la photographie comme un moyen de communiquer, de jouer et de faire connaissance. Dans ces cas, j'evitais de me sentir comme une simple observatrice et j'entrais plutôt en dialogue avec le sujet. De plus, ma caméra numérique me permettait de montrer les portraits instantanément sur l’écran, ce qui a accentué l’échange. À mon retour de l’Ouganda j’ai créé ce livre dans lequel j’ai compilé les portraits des gens qui m’ont demandé de les photographier. Chaque portrait ou groupe de portraits est accompagné d’un paragraphe qui décrit les activités entourant la prise de photo et ce qui rend particulier le moment avec le sujet. Les textes sont en français (ma langue maternelle), en anglais (la langue de communication entre les Canadiens et les Ougandais) et en Luo (la langue parlée dans la région de Gulu). Ce livre s’intitule Mak Cala, ce qui veut dire prend ma photo en Luo. Une copie de la version artisanale a été envoyée à St-Jude Children’s Home.



Tous les profits accumulés par la vente en ligne de Mak Cala iront financer des projets de développement supportés par CVAP et par Le Projet Mercy.
