À propos du livre
My inspiration for this book began with a incredible journey to New Zealand in January 2010. I returned home with more than 2000 images of a country whose landscape and natural surroundings were as pure as one can imagine. This experience left me with an urge to expose our own country's abuse of water, and to make an effort to demonstrate the importance of a greater respect for this life-giving source.
Before I began my exploration, I believed, as do many Americans, that something magical happens inside a sewer treatment facility. I assumed the sewer experts must have some sort of remedy that would eliminate every drop of oil, paint, and medication we pour down a drain or flush down a toilet. I assumed wrong. Sewer treatment facilities remove solids from water, treat and replace it in acceptable condition. That's all.
Beautiful Water is a collection of photographs taken in Pennsylvania and the surrounding area. The luminous colors, at times almost supernatural, highlight the destruction caused by our greed, misuse and destruction of water. I shot all of the photographs with a Canon G9 and none of the colors were enhanced.
When I photograph nature and the damage we inflict on it, I am encouraged to believe that small efforts can give birth to big changes. When the work goes well, I'm filled with a sense of pride and a feeling that I'm contributing to the conservation and restoration of our natural resources. My hope is that my images educate and inspire others to take action toward what must be a common goal.
