A gardener who doesn't understand the science of gardening is like a driver who doesn't know how the car works or a chef who doesn't know the chemistry of cooking. To not be cognizant of your field's science is to operate only on a guess. This book will aim to open up a second option: the educated guess.
To better educate our guesses, we must know the content, but perhaps most chiefly, we must be apt at observation. Throughout this book, I put a heavy emphasis on the potentials of observation, as I argue its familiarity that gives us the ability to troubleshoot successfully. For the same reasons a parent tries to understand their kid or an owner their pet, we should strive to understand plants.
