Digital Paintings
The images shown here represent a movement in digital art or computational art that deliberately utilizes the technological possibilities of image editing and generation to achieve a painterly aesthetic. This approach bridges the gap between traditional painting and modern photography/graphics, aiming for a visual experience that blurs the boundaries of both media.
From an art historical perspective, similar tendencies can already be found in the photographic tradition of Pictorialism, which, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, sought to make photographs appear painterly through soft focus, special printing techniques, and manual interventions, in order to promote their recognition as an art form. Common stylistic features of pictorialist photographs included reduced contour sharpness, diffused lighting, careful selection of the frame, flowing transitions, and intensive post-processing of prints, sometimes even of the negative before producing the positive. In the digital era, this approach is continued and revolutionized by new tools.
Digital paintings use photography (or digital base images) merely as a starting point to construct a subjective, emotionally charged reality. The painterly effect is achieved through digital techniques such as overlays (double/multiple exposure), color manipulation, the use of texture or grunge filters, and the deliberate, often dramatic design of light and shadow. This is reminiscent of the Surrealists and the expressive use of color in Fauvism, but realized with the digital brush.
Stylized, swirling forms appear, reminiscent of smoke, liquids, or organic elements, combined with complex, almost cartographic-looking color fields.
