The Berlin Wall fell on 9th November 1989. Two days later Andreas Muhs was at the border crossing point Bernauer Straße, which had just been opened. Because of his experience of the Wall opening and the photos that he took at the time, he decided to make photography into his profession. Today he lives in Berlin, working as an independent architectural photographer.



Muhs moved from Hamburg to Berlin at the beginning of 1991. Using a Leica M camera and the black and white film, he captured the eastern part of the city in unique urban impressions until the mid ninties. He was fascinated by the waste open spaces at Potsdamer Platz and in Friedrichstraße, by streets and backyards in the neighbourhoods Spandauer Vorstadt and Scheunenviertel, the first demolition work and the huge constructions sites. It was a rare opportunity to observe changes taking place in a city over a very short time.
