I first visited Cuba in December 2016 as a student in a Peter Turnley workshop. I returned in 2018 and then a number of visits were cancelled until I visited earlier this year. On each occasion, I spent my days on the streets making pictures of Cuban people. Venues included Havana, Vinales, and Santiago de Cuba. Besides city streets, I was able to photograph in schools, boxing gyms, beaches, tobacco farms, dance studios, and music venues. I made many street portraits but was also able to take candid pictures. During each visit I had conversations with individuals as they invited me to take their picture.

People are friendly and are usually happy to be photographed. This Zine includes two different types of work. For the most part, I made street portraits during my stays in Cuba. I asked people if I could take their picture and the answer was almost always “Yes.” In addition, however, I took candid pictures, street photographs, capturing a scene of life where people are not aware of my photographing.
