And So It Begins is about a journey from photography and travel having a rather minor, but meaningful place in my life, to the pursuits having a much larger and more central role in the way that I spend my time. It includes 86 full page photographs made during a particularly creative period for me. From an early visit to Montreal, where I first dabbled in street photography, to social documentary photography in old neighborhoods in China cities to nature and architecture photography from China to New York to Chicago and San Francisco. Each of the photographic essays in the book are introduced by a narrative addressing the motivations with which each of the photographic subjects were approached.

Among the jurors selecting Michael’s photographs for exhibitions, publication, and awards were the curators of photography for the Philadelphia Art Museum, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and a consulting curator in the photography department at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. His photographs have been selected for group exhibitions around the country and have been selected for recognition in national and international competitions including the International Photography Awards, the Px3 Prix de la Photographie Paris, the Worldwide Photography Gala, the Pollux Awards, and the Black and White Spider Awards. Portfolios of his work were selected for publication in COLOR Magazine, and in the Center of Fine Art Photography’s Portfolio Showcase Volume IV and Portfolio Showcase Volume V.
