POST NO BILLS is a common sight in cities around the world: These signs were originally put up to discourage posting handbills (like flyers or posters) on building facades. Ironically, bills were still posted on these walls, and to this day, a walk around most cities in the world will likely confirm how people love to post ‘bills’ where they are asked not to. In the old days, the bills were for guerilla marketing; these days there are countless other things to find: campaign posters, flyers for lost persons/pets/items, event announcements, advertisements, photographs, and even art. A single glance, if you know where and how to look, can reveal subservience, mindfulness, information, belief, and art. While to some it pollutes architecture, those who see beauty in the mundane and find fascination in the energy of street culture know that a “Post No Bills” wall adds that much more dynamism and character to a city.
