joan schwartz is an artist living and working in Brookline, Massachusetts. She is primarily a sculptor using clay and mixed media to produce work for both intimate and public spaces. joan is a long-time member of Studios Without Walls, an artists’ collaborative that produces annual exhibitions of outdoor site responsive installations. She also is a member of The Time Project , within which she created The Goddess Project. She has recently been exploring the interaction of photographs, collage, and drawing.

joan’s work in clay is influenced by her sitting practice. In it she explores the interaction of space and form, inside and outside, body and spirit, and the nexus of science, technology, and art. As a former dancer she is drawn to the nuance of gesture and the ability of the body to communicate through subtle changes of position.
