History records five ascetics as the first to hear the Middle Way. They achieved enlightenment on the spot when the Buddha returned from a good hard think under a bodhi tree and explained that suffering wasn't required for awakening.

There was a sixth. This is his story.

Sonny was around the corner doing something ascetic-y when the Buddha gave his First Sermon, and he missed the whole thing. While his five companions joined the Buddha's order, Sonny kept suffering, convinced he simply needed to try harder.

Years later, he has perfected the art of Taking Things Seriously. He runs the Bureau for Spiritual Excellence, where enlightenment requires proper documentation, meditation has minimum standards and KPIs, and spontaneous joy is a Class C infraction. Then Devadatta arrives, the Buddha's ambitious cousin who once tried to optimize the Five Dhyāni Buddhas, and finds at last a receptive audience.

Then a round man with a belly full of laughter arrives carrying a sack of toys. He is definitely not Santa. Wrong pantheon entirely.

Budai the Laughing Buddha doesn't fill out forms. He juggles. He gives unauthorized gifts. He laughs at seventeen-page assessment questionnaires. Worse, people start laughing with him. Guards share snacks, clerks tell jokes, and efficiency rises through the terrible method of people enjoying their work.

Now one forgotten ascetic must face an uncomfortable question. What if he has spent lifetimes making enlightenment complicated because being serious made him feel important? What if the cosmic joke is that he is working desperately toward the thing he was offered for free, once, around the corner?
