This portfolio book encapsulates the art practice of Elsa Marie Keefe. Although fine art photography is the base of her work, existing as a muse, modeling for other artists while also capturing self-portraits is another large part of her journey. Besides acting as the photographer and model on both sides of the camera, her work extends far beyond the lens. The primary way of presenting her photography is by painting over her printed images. She usually prints on canvas but also on a variety of mediums including fine art archival paper, wood, metal, and acrylic to name a few. She makes books by hand using an ancient book-binding practice called coptic binding, which serve as portable studios, one-of-a-kind fine art books, journals, places where she presents some of her most vulnerable images, words and memories. She also creates mixed media pieces, adding not only paint to the photograph printed on canvas, but also crystals, bones, leaves, flowers, sand, dirt… a myriad of objects collected in nature that she encases in resin over a wooden panel. In addition to the aforementioned creations, Performance Art is also a huge part of her art practice, taking stand naked in gallery spaces and in public spaces, commenting on the topics of shame, trauma and overall body awareness. Fine art films, documentary work and videos are other powerful mediums that she utilizes. Most recently she started a clothing line called Ritual of Joy, which features hand-painted art clothing, some of which includes her photography printed on fabric. This book includes current available art from these various series and mediums including raw photography, paint over images, mixed media, performance art, video stills, book samples and valuable archives.
