Mary Ciani has created series in oils, acrylics, silk screen, digital painting, Ebony pencil, oil pastels, ink, photography, video, and installation. She was a member of Summer-White Studios in Houston, and of AFEW artists collaborative, was an artist for the underground newspaper Pittsburgh Fair Witness, created album covers for her sister Suzanne Ciani, and exhibited widely including at ACM SIGGRAPH, and several one person shows.

Ciani received a BA in art from Smith College, an MFA from Carnegie-Mellon University, and an MFA from the University of Houston. She studied abstract expressionist painting with Stephen Greene at the Art Students League, and the art at MoMA. She learned line from Leonard Baskin, color from Mignonette Cheng, and courage from John Alexander, James Surls, and Suzanne Bloom. She was on the faculty of, and a founding member of the Visualization Department at Texas A&M University.
