À propos

Josema Zamorano is a Mexican-Canadian artist based in Vancouver. In the last few years Josema has been questioning the camera as the pivotal tool of modernity for documentation and reproduction of a common reality we maintain actually exists. While the machine’s eye seems to solidify what we see —and even more in the age of internet and the cell phone camera— Josema seeks to play with its possibilities of ambiguity by negotiating performative ways of photo-graphing. He experiments with a camera in order to mediate his experience of being in the world by in-situ crafting photographs that smear light and/or layer strata of time and space. Sandokai, his second solo show at Back Gallery Project, was featured at the 2016 Capture Photography Festival in Vancouver. He worked as a telecommunications engineer before making a turn to the arts. With intersecting interests in poetry, existential philosophy and visual arts he earned a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies (2012) from UBC in Canada.
