À propos du livre
This volume of new translations of some Rilke poems is made up of two parts. The first gives – in facing pages that allow a line-by-line comparison – the original German text and Hellmut Juretschke’s own translation of each poem. The second part offers for each poem comments on detailed choices that had to be made in translating specific words and sentences within the context of the overall framework and mood of that poem, as well as on the appropriate rhyme and rhythm close to reflecting those of the German original, all originating from the author’s personal responses to Rilke’s texts.

Mount Desert, Maine
Hellmut Juretschke, a retired physicist born long ago in Berlin and lately living year-round in Mount Desert, Maine, was stimulated by the local Senior College poetry programs to draw on his roots to try his hand at English versions of poems he remembers from his earlier years or whose German seemed to resonate with the language he remembered.
