À propos du livre
Maxwell Gray was the pseudonym of Mary Gleed Tuttiett, a novelist born in 1846 in Newport, Isle of Wight, England. She gained popular and critical acclaim for her 1886 novel "The Silence of Dean Maitland" - the story of an ambitious churchman who commits manslaughter but does nothing when his best friend is charged with the crime. She went on to write some 20 novels - many with Isle of Wight settings - along with poetry, short story collections and numerous articles, all despite chronic illness that left her bedridden, and at best able to work two to three hours a day. This new biography studies the life and works of a forgotten author whose books give a vivid picture of the Isle of Wight, and of England in general, in the second half of the 19th century.
