À propos du livre
When the story opens Shaun the main character has spent a year back in Munich, having returned from Dublin the previous Christmas feeling totally defeated. On his psychiatrist’s advice he writes an account of why his memories of Ireland are so painful. He addresses the memoir to his children who having lived most of their lives in Germany, have a very superficial view of what it means to be Irish.
In his narrative, Shaun takes them through his difficult childhood, growing up in a working class area in Dublin and attending a strict Christian Brothers school. He takes them through his teenage years, mapping out the developments which forced him to reject Catholicism and turn towards Communism. This sets the scene for his years in East Germany and the love affair which was to change his life. The suspense which has built up from the opening pages culminates in his unexpected meeting with a beautiful Polish girl, on a rainy day in Wittenberg, in East Germany. The events which follow change his life completely and convince him of the great power which lies dormant within each of us.
His life experience gives him a more inclusive and tolerant attitude than the homophobic, misogynistic god of his youth. The quotations which accompany him through the story change in tone and content, reflecting the development taking place in Shaun himself. For the briefest of moments, he recognizes the hidden God, deep within himself and in those he loves. This challenges him to stand up for the truth and reject all that is false around him. By the end of the novel he had stopped talking about himself in the third person and can accept who he has become. The tragedy is that there is no place left for him in an Ireland which hides behind a dangerous facade.
