À propos du livre
Addressing the hypocrisy of society's consumption of female sexuality its both a state of liberation and imprisonment. Trapped in these dualistic societal expectations and definitions of what it means to be a sexually empowered woman in today’s society most women understand how our culture manufactures female sexuality; and ergo controls it through notions of morality and expectation that simply does not exist for men in the same way.
This work attempts to move metaphorically between these contradictions. It ventures beyond the two-dimensionality of the image to reveal these tension to create a dialectic relationship between the varying perceived surfaces of the image. The use of light within the composition, the human form, and the photographic surface itself all utilizes both the psychological and physical space of the photographic print. Intentionally the work is presented to the viewer in an unframed naked state for viewing believing that this reiterates a direct relationship to these underlying complex surfaces.
The lack of depth of field in the composition, the use of a textured cotton rag print, the model's movement in relation to the varying surfaces and the body all elicits a relationship that produces a forceful and painful drama played out as a psychologically claustrophobic relationship within the work.
